Menstrual cups are a type of reusable feminine hygiene product. They are small funnel shaped cups, usually made out of silicone or rubber which are inserted into the vagina to catch and collect menstrual fluids. Menstrual cups have been around since 1860s, but only became widely promoted since the 1930s. With recent design changes and the availability of soft silicone materials they have become more widely accepted. The menstrual cycle is a complex biological process between various glands and organs. The process starts in the brain, where the hypothalamus causes the pituitary gland to produce specific chemicals which in turn triggers the ovaries to produce the sex hormones estrogen and progesterone.
